Rosie pranced out of the hut and nudged against the employee’s hand, desperate to hide the fear and panic she was feeling.

“Oh, well hello there, little Rosie. Here’s some food for you. And where’s your cute little sister?” the employee asked.

Rosie’s eyes went wide. Let me go get her for you quickly, she thought, snatching the tiny paper bowl filled with food and praying her plan would work. Rosie dove back into the hut, hidden in darkness once again. She could see the employee peering into the hole, checking to see where Mayra was, and knew she had to act quickly. She wrapped a small blanket around her body, hiding her paws, and confidently dashed out of the hut as the employee called: “Mayra? Where are you, Mayra?”

Rosie rubbed against the employee’s hand once again, hidden beneath the blanket and pretending to be her sister.

“Oh, good morning, beautiful Mayra. It looks like your sister wants to eat inside your hut today. Here’s your breakfast, love.”

Rosie sat down quietly and started eating Mayra’s food as the employee moved on to the next cage. Sister switch, she thought with a smile. And double breakfast.

“I swear if these people say anything scary happens in there, we’ll have to start personally escorting adopters through this facility,” the woman said to the man.

“Yeah, who has time for that? We’re overworked as is,” he agreed.

Mayra pressed against the wall as she walked, following closely behind the adopters with soundless steps. They snaked their way down the hall and headed toward the small cat room. And when they reached the space between the cat and dog rooms, Mayra skidded to a halt and screamed at what happened next.

It came from the tiny hallway closet. Mayra’s shriek of terror was overpowered by the screams of the adopters as it flew toward them from the closet and chased them down the hall. A black cloak was draped over its shoulders, a hood hiding its ghastly warped face from view. Only darkness ruled where eyes should have been. It screeched and fluttered as if it had just been released from a netherworld, soaring and chasing the adopters back down the hallway. Mayra ran after them, and turned one last time to see it floating in the air, a glimmer of light sparking from the darkness of the hood as if it were hosting a sinister smile.

Mayra turned and ran for her life. She
